Join us for a conversation with artist Stephen Towns and historian Lu Vickers, co-author of "Paradise Park: Tourism and Segregation at Silver Springs". This program celebrates "Safer Waters: Picturing Black Recreation at Midcentury", featuring Towns' paintings and quilts that illuminate the history of Paradise Park, a Florida lake resort for Black Americans during the Jim Crow era.
WAM invites families to a Family ArtVenture with Stephen Towns, artist of “Safer Waters: Picturing Black Recreation at Midcentury.” Inspired by his quilts and paintings of a midcentury Florida lakeside resort for Black families, the program blends art, history, and hands-on discovery. Highlights include storytime with the artist, sensory activities, simple sewing, and music and dance from the era.
Enjoy an informal evening of creativity and conversation hosted by artist Christine Vumai. Settle into a relaxed atmosphere in the galleries with two drop-in experiences: a guided tour of Safer Waters: Black Recreation at Midcentury and a hand-quilting activity inspired by the exhibition.

Celebrate the opening of “Collidoscope: de la Torre Brothers Retro-Perspective” with an afternoon of performances and artist talks. At 1 PM, Wichita-based Matachines dance group La Sagrada Familia will perform, followed by a Spanish-language artist talk from 1:30–2:15 PM and an English-language artist talk from 2:30–3:15 PM with Einar and Jamex de la Torre.

Edited by Wichita filmmaker Maliq Little of Leak Productions, the film explores a central Florida lake resort for Black visitors (1949–1969) through the perspectives of artist Stephen Towns and those who experienced it. Join curator Dr. Tera Lee Hedrick and editor Maliq Little as they share the story behind the documentary and Towns’ work.
