Pete Armstrong Photography Lecture Series—Artist Talk on David Horback: Where the Hell Is Wichita?
Photographer David Hornback answered the question his title poses for people all over the world. Hornback has showcased his black-and-white photography of Wichita throughout galleries and museums in the US, Germany, and Spain. Now Hornback—a Wichita native—is bringing those photos home, and WAM is delighted to tell this unique local story.
About the Pete Armstrong Photography Lecture Series:
Edward “Pete” Armstrong (1921-2009) was a respected business and civic leader and talented photographer. A photographic officer during World War II, he pursued his passion for photography throughout his life. After military service, he joined McCormick Armstrong Co. in Wichita and ultimately rose to become chairman of the successful family company. His wife, Mickey Armstrong, and family honor Pete and his lifelong love of photography through endowed support for ongoing talks on photography topics at the Wichita Art Museum.

About David Hornback
Bilbao-based artist David Hornback first studied photography at Wichita East High School, prompting him to photograph everything around him: his classmates, his family and neighbors, and the city. After high school, he boxed up those negatives and set off to study photojournalism at the University of Kansas, where he was recognized as College Photographer of the Year by the National Press Photographers Association. In his early career, he travelled on assignment for newspapers in Jackson (Mississippi), Providence, West Palm Beach, and San Jose. His first assignment for National Graphic became the cover of the publication’s World magazine, and for coverage of the Loma Prieta earthquake at the San Francisco Bay Area’s Mercury News, he and colleagues won the 1990 Pulitzer Prize. Hornback travelled Europe as a photojournalist, chronicling the Berlin Wall pre- and post-fall. On a trip back to visit his parents in Wichita in 1998, he discovered two boxes of his high school negatives, which became Where the Hell is Wichita?, a body of work he premiered in Berlin. Now Hornback is based in Bilbao, where he works as a free-lance photographer and teacher. In addition to Wichita Art Museum’s presentation of Where the Hell is Wichita?, his work is on view this year in Bilbao (Berlin Stories), Rome (Tra Ponte e Nebbia), and his series of street photography books (5 Photo Books).
