About This Exhibition

Photographer David Hornback answered the question his title poses for people all over the world. Hornback has showcased his black-and-white photography of Wichita throughout galleries and museums in the US, Germany, and Spain. Now Hornback—a Wichita native—is bringing those photos home, and WAM is delighted to tell this unique local story.

David Hornback, Wichita East High 1970s (009), about 1979-1980. Giclee print on 350 g Hahnamühle Baryta FB paper, 16.5 x 23.4 inches, Collection of the artist

Hornback began his interest in photography right here at Wichita High School East and has gone on to have commercial and critical success as a photographer globally. Where the Hell is Wichita? features photographs he took in high school—the earliest images of the artist’s distinguished career. (Hornback found the negatives in his childhood College Hill home on a family visit.) These photos will spark conversations and memories of Wichita’s schools, neighborhoods, and people.

David Hornback: Where the Hell is Wichita? is organized by WAM with the artist.
