Join us for a conversation with artist Stephen Towns and historian Lu Vickers, co-author of "Paradise Park: Tourism and Segregation at Silver Springs". This program celebrates "Safer Waters: Picturing Black Recreation at Midcentury", featuring Towns' paintings and quilts that illuminate the history of Paradise Park, a Florida lake resort for Black Americans during the Jim Crow era.
WAM invites families to a Family ArtVenture with Stephen Towns, the artist behind “Safer Waters: Black Recreation at Midcentury.” Inspired by Towns’s paintings and quilts depicting a midcentury Florida lakeside resort where Black families gathered during segregation, the program blends art, history, and hands-on exploration. Highlights include gallery storytime with the artist, sensory activities inspired by Paradise Park, hand sewing and wearable art, and swing music and dance that bring the era to life.
Join multidisciplinary artist Cydnee Reese for an evening of art and writing! Reese will share her poems inspired by works of art in the collection, then guide you to create a written response to what you see.
