About this Event
Artist Winfred Rembert (1945 – 2021) pictured Black life in the Jim Crow-era South on carved and tooled leather paintings. His Chain Gang Picking Cotton #3 is one of the newest additions to WAM’s permanent collection on view for the first time in Past & Present: Celebrating New Acquisitions and Collection Highlights at the Wichita Art Museum. Learn about leather tooling and the late artist in a talk by his son, Winfred Rembert, Jr.

About Winfred Rembert, Jr.
Winfred Rembert, Jr., is an artist and lecturer dedicated to preserving and advancing the legacy of his late father, Winfred Rembert, Sr. During a visit to Paducah, Kentucky, he was honored with the key to the city and the establishment of the Winfred Rembert, Jr., Scholarship. In 1992, he received a certificate of appreciation from the US Congress.
He has lectured at museums across the country—including in Flint, Michigan; Richmond, Virginia; Hot Springs, Arkansas; and Albany and New York, New York—and at academic institutions such as Tufts University, Andrew College, and Worcester State. He has presented to audiences at Yale University, Wesleyan University, Gateway Community College, NXTHVN, and the Connecticut State Capitol, and he has appeared on CBS This Morning. A passionate comic-book collector, Winfred lives in Hamden, Connecticut, with his wife, children, and mother.
