The print, Shopper, is a classic Miller image of what has become a symbol of 20th Century American culture, that is, women strolling in front of shop windows, performing their critical economic roles as consumers. In the center foreground of the composition one sees a frontal, three-quarter view of a woman dressed in street clothes, a coat trimmed with fur, carrying her handbag and packages. Like all of Miller's figures of women, young or old, the center figure in Shopper recalls the ample proportions of women in paintings by Titian, Rubens, or Renoir.
