Planting rice and wheat in rows is easier to distribute seeds evenly, it allows plants to have adequate space to receive sunlight, prevents overcrowding, allows for cultivation of weeds between rows, and increases yields.
With newly developed GPS guided tractors and planters, crop rows on relatively level land are almost mathematically straight. But with pre-GPS tractors or on fields that are irregularly shaped, interesting patterns sometimes occur. It’s highly unlikely that farmers do this for aesthetic reasons, but the results sometimes look like abstract drawings.
