            Poor was born in Chapman, Kansas. He studied at Stanford University, The Slade School, London and at the Acadйmie Julien, in Paris. During the 1930s he executed two mural projects for the federal government. Poor taught for a number of years at Columbia University in New York City, and later at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Skowhegan, Maine. Poor was an architect, builder, and ceramist as well as a painter.
