The “Rambler” quilt pattern was developed to commemorate the first battle of the American Civil War. As the Union Army advanced towards the Confederate capital of Richmond, Virginia, they encountered Confederate soldiers at a key railroad junction near Manassas, Virginia.  The crisscrossed squares and triangles of the quilt’s composition referenced the rails and tracks that were a key strategic element in the topography of the battle.
