About the Artwork

Joe Jones—the self-taught son of a house painter and native of St. Louis—used his prints and paintings to advocate for the working class. Missouri Wheat Farmers—a detail from Jones’ post office mural in Magnolia, Arkansas—is typical of Jones’ farming scenes. While not as overtly political as Jones’ images of striking unionists or racial prejudice, Missouri Wheat Farmers nevertheless celebrates the worker.
