About the Artwork
More than any other sculptor, de Creeft explored the rich variety of stone available to the direct carver. The monumental, compelling head of Mediterranean Girl harmonizes the characteristics of limestone—its texture, grain, and color—with the artist’s feeling for abstract mass. Originally entitled “Mallocran Girl,” de Creeft changed the title when he sold another piece under that name. According to the artist’s wife, the head was inspired by de Creeft’s then sister-in-law, Mrs. Eva Carr of Wheeling, West Virginia.
