Isaac Soyer, born in Russia in 1902, was a prominent American social realist painter known for his depictions of working-class life in New York City. He was one of six children, with twin brothers who were also painters. The family immigrated to the United States in 1912, settling in the Bronx. Soyer studied art at various institutions and painted portraits as well as scenes of everyday life, often focusing on the working class. He also taught art classes for the Works Progress Administration’s Federal Art Project.
