Senior Wednesday, a collaboration between several Wichita museums and cultural attractions, offers lifelong learning opportunities for active adults 55+. FRIENDS UNIVERSITY FLUTE CHOIR
The Friends University Flute Choir was initiated in 1995 when Amy Hoffman began teaching at the University. It is comprised of Friends University students (both music and non-music majors) as well as alumni and community members.
The group performs regularly at chamber music concerts on campus, and in 2010 began playing Christmas music in the lobby of the Riney Fine Arts Center before the annual Christmas Candlelight concert. The flute choir also enjoys sharing their unique ensemble sound with the Wichita community off campus for a variety of events.
Over the years, the repertoire has evolved from primarily arrangements to a greater emphasis on original flute choir works. The repertoire is expanding exponentially due to the increased number of flute choirs across the country. Much of the new music includes the increasingly popular contrabass flute, and in the summer of 2024, a grant was received from the Naftzger Fund for Fine Arts to purchase a contrabass flute. This provides the opportunity to play all the newly written pieces and enhance the sound of the flute choir.
The flute choir has been selected through audition recordings six times to perform at the Kansas Music Educators Association (KMEA) state convention in February.
