About the Artwork
Kenneth Hayes Miller was an influential painter at the Art Students League of New York where he taught from 1911 to 1936 and from 1944 to 1951. He emphasized the fundamentals of Renaissance composition, but encouraged students to take the everyday world, in their particular case, the New York City streets and people, as their subjects. Miller and his students, which included Reginald Marsh and Isabel Bishop, became known as the Fourteenth Street School, the location of Miller’s studio.
