At age 26 and longing for adventure, Sue Jean Covacevich—Kansas farm girl and budding artist—walked into the Winfield train station and bought a ticket to Mexico City. As a result of that fateful decision, Covacevich lived over a decade in Mexico, teaching and making art. Although she eventually returned to Kansas, Covacevich never lost her wanderlust, traveling continually throughout her life to find new subjects for her prints and paintings.

In Mont-Saint-Michel, Covacevich pictures the famed French monastery, a site she visited on one of her many trips abroad. Built atop a tiny island of the coast of Normandy in northwestern France, the church has been a destination for worshipers and tourists for over 1,000 years. American soldiers stationed in Normandy during World War II noted that it seemed “to float on the sea as gracefully as a ship under full sail, catching all the changing colors of the clouds.”
