About the Artwork

Kansas artist and art educator Charles Sanderson earned a BA in Art Education from Emporia State University and an MA in Fine Arts from Ft. Hays State University. For more than 35 years, he taught art while also maintaining his own art practice, working primarily in oil and watercolor. Sanderson also founded the Kansas Watercolor Society. Although his style changed over time, he remained committed to depicting an abstract Kansas landscape. The watercolor From Prairies to the Mountains is typical of his late style. In it, he portrays the Kansas landscape in prismatic shapes and pure colors, a departure from the muddier palette and more compressed geometries of his early career.
