Join Lindsay Pollock, author of The Girl with the Gallery: Edith Gregor Halpert and the Making of the Modern Art Market (2006), for a talk about the influential, trail-blazing, and politically courageous art dealer who forged a market for American Art—and sold more than 30 artworks to WAM—against the backdrop of midcentury Manhattan. In an era when American artists didn’t count, and women were expected to stay home, Halpert burst onto the New York gallery scene, defying all cultural and societal rules.
From her start, she sold only American art, discovering and exhibiting the most important and controversial artists from Stuart Davis to Georgia O’Keeffe. She ran her business for a remarkable 44 years, cultivating some of the most illustrious art collectors of the day, including Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, Electra Havemeyer Webb, and selling to museums across the US, including Elizabeth S. Navas for the Roland P. Murdock Collection at the Wichita Art Museum.
Pollock’s involvement with the art world includes roles as editor-in-chief of Art in America magazine as well as Chief Communication and Content Officer at the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Lindsay Pollock
Lindsay Pollock is a freelance art consultant based in New York. Previously she was the Chief Communication and Content Officer at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Before pivoting to museum work, Lindsay was an arts journalist and author for nearly two decades. From 2011-2017, she was Editor-in-Chief of Art in America, one of the oldest and most respected contemporary art magazines in the world. From 2003-2011, she was a culture writer for publications and digital platforms including Bloomberg News and The Art Newspaper. Pollock is also the author of “The Girl with the Gallery” (2006), a biography on pioneering art dealer Edith Halpert, which inspired an exhibition at New York’s Jewish Museum, “Edith Halpert and the Rise of American Art” (2019-2020).
