About the Artwork
Quilts in the “Log Cabin” pattern were constructed of blocks composed of a central square surrounded by rectangles. Intended to reference the structure of humble wood homes, the center square, usually a gold or red color, represented the hearth of the home or a candle in the window. The surrounding rectangles indicted the logs of the walls. Mary Ann Lyman’s arrival in Goddard, Kansas, in 1872 coincided with a period in the early 1870s when the Kansas State Fair offered prizes for the best “Log Cabin” pattern quilt.
